5 Tips for When Life Feels Messy
I don’t even know how many times I’ve felt like my life is just messy, but to be on the safe side, let’s just say a lot.
Have you ever felt like this? When you just don’t feel like yourself or you feel like nothing is organized or consistent? It feels like you’re falling behind and no matter what you do you just don’t know how to get back on top.
And it’s so easy to just get stuck in this cycle of “messy”, you know? Sometimes it feels so much better to just let yourself go rather than take responsibility of your life and my actions.
Don’t worry, I’ve been down that path. Countless times, actually.
The trick is that one you realize that you’ve gotten into a funk, don’t let yourself keep going down that path! The longer you wait, the harder it gets to try and bounce back.
There are a few things that I always do when I find myself feeling a little off my game, so if you’re feeling like your life is just plain ol’ messy, try these five things:
1) Make Your Bed
The very first thing that I always do when I feel this way is to make my bed, because on the one hand, it only takes about a minute or two, and on the other hand, it already gives me that sense of accomplishment and routine that I can feel like I’m missing. Plus, it makes my bedroom look a little bit nicer! It’s definitely a nice, quick thing to try to get your life feeling back on track.
2) Check Something Off Your To-Do List
Often, when life is feeling messy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with everything that you have to do, whether that be work, cleaning, or running errands. Getting one thing checked off of your to-do list helps so much because that’s one less thing that you need to worry about, plus you're doing something productive! It’s a win-win-win.
I know that when you’re in this funk that it can be hard to make that effort to get something done, but I’ve found that it really helps to get rid of that messy feeling. Start with something small if you can! The trick is to just start.
3) Get Your Body Moving
There’s something about sweating a little bit that helps knock me out of that messy-feeling funk. Whenever I feel my life getting a little messy, I like to go out and move my body (not that it doesn’t take a lot of motivation for me to do it, believe me, it does) but working out of any kind always makes me feel a little bit more together and on top of things.
You can try yoga, going out to the gym, or doing some other workout videos that you can find on YouTube.
It can be a big push to get over that initial hump and start, but believe me, it’s worth it!
4) Keep Something Consistent
A lot of why I feel “messy” is that I don’t have much routine or consistency in my day. So to get me feeling back in tip-top shape, I try to add a little bit more consistency to my life and make something constant.
I’ve done things like going to bed at the same time every night, eating the same thing for breakfast every day, doing the same workout routine, or sticking to the same morning or night time schedule. Try some things out and see what you like!
5) Make a Plan
There’s always so much going on in my head that sometimes I just need to get it all down. The simple solution? A brain dump. I write down things that I need to do, the things that I would like to do, the worries or thoughts that I have, and anything else that I just need to get down on paper.
Then I make a plan. What things should I do today? What should I do tomorrow? The next day? The day after that? You can even make your plan include smaller stuff, such as the contents of a workout or the food you’re going to eat.
Just remember to not add too much to your plate. A little structure can be nice, but overloading yourself with things to do may just put you right back where you started.
